May 3 Despascio

This is the card we gave each one of the young men and young women that we treated. The men's room had this picture above the door and we decided it looked just like Abraham Lincoln. Do not leave your chair unattended. This is Manuel S. who was very grateful ( hard to tell from his expression ) and he bowed to us at least six times - even as he was led away to check-out.   Tiupa - wearing a Septodont bandana and trying to be a bandito.  He has been on every trip ( I think about 27 )  and is the chief engineer for the clinic.  A view from inside the compound One of our trusty guards Someone trying to escape ... An action shot of us actually working .. We are smiling.   Really. A band came through playing some nice music but did not stay.  Wished they had. Our 'rainbow' patient Alex.  Some of the gifts our patients gave us.  A kind gesture. Susan getting a back massage f...

May 2 Tuesday - Me encanta mirar para el arco iris.

Group photo taken of the dentists and hygienists taken just as we got to the building.   Great group of individuals that want to serve without recognition or accolades. Group photo of the dental assistants.  The cutest one is in the front in the middle in dark blue.  Some are students wanting to get experience before applying to hygiene or dental school, some are children or spouses, and others are just there to help where needed...er... they ALL want to help - so don't read that the wrong way. Our first patient of the day, Genesis.. And we were excited thinking our next patients would be Exodus, Levitcus and Numbers.  We laughed about "numb-ers" and how fitting that would be for us.  So the next patient was named Yuni - which means exodus in Spanish !  No. Several patients later ( we will list all their names at the end of this post ) - Elmer Carrenza wanted me to sign his shirt and we explained that was too much, but I did agree to s...

May 1 Monday Gracias de todo Corazon

This morning we left some money and a Book of Mormon for the woman who cleans our room and this is the note she left us.   Maybe she will install the hot tub and massage chair in our room as requested.  ha.  The Hondurans that we have met are so humble and friendly. Our first patient of the day - Marco. He awoke at 1 AM this morning to travel to the clinic.  It was 9 AM when we saw him. He was a good young man and the course of our day was set by his good nature.  Today is the 'Labor Day' of Honduras so the streets were empty except for some planned protesting which our drivers avoided and we did not get to see.   They are very concerned about our security and we will miss the speedy police escorts and armed guards around the building. A small group of us got on a bus and spent some of the afternoon visiting some families in the area that were having a hard time financially.  We took some princess dresses and the little girl...

Sunday April 30 Llamados a servir

Image
6:05 AM in the breakfast area.   We are not very good at sleeping in.  We were the only ones there and the staff were glad to have something to do since they open at 6AM and most people sleep in on Sunday morning - not us. Susan and the food area.  We made a sample plate of all the curious foods ... we at least tried to eat ( or in some cases, just take a sniff ) of the local delicacies... A picture out the window as we pulled into the church parking lot.  The ward we attended was only about 20 minutes away from the hotel, so it was not too long. Susan and LeeAnn heading into the church.  The church grounds were cut from the side of a big hill and it was a beautiful building.   But the members inside the building were what made it holy. Claudia Rivas, Susan and Cynthia modeling glasses in our little 'lentes para leer' room after church meetings had ended. We started with about 120 pairs of glasses and by the end of the h...

Vaya con Dios April 29 Saturday

Our first patient of the day - Elvis.  Great guy and laughed kindly at our broken Spanish. Group picture with the Christensens from Layton Utah.  You will notice the YW on the left - Lidia - has both a pink (designating which stake they are from ) and a red ( papers submitted or received mission call ) wristband.  She will find out where she will serve later this week. This is Oscar Castro.   He came back to the clinic after we had completed his treatment and brought us two little gifts  - a Mayan temple and a Mayan statue.  No, we will not be going to jail for taking antiquities out of the country - but we were touched by his kindness and thankfulness.   So we were sitting at a table a few days ago during one of the meals and met this woman from Utah who served a mission in North Carolina years ago and remembered going to dinner in 1989 with a family in a little town in Virgina called Lawrenceville. That would be Mark - one of m...
